HLSA is relatively new on campus, but is has become active very quickly. This is not unexpected since Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in Arkansas. HLSA is affiliated with the Hispanic National Bar Association.
HLSA has three primary goals. First, HLSA actively strives to engage in the recruitment of Hispanic students to the Bowen School of Law. The organization also participates in the recruitment of other minority students. Among the recruitment activities in which HLSA participates are the Minority Pre-Law Day and the Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program.
Second, HLSA members provide Hispanic law students with academic mentoring and moral support throughout law school. Members frequently plan and participate in a number of activities together, such as social dinners, fundraisers, community service activities, and team-building events.
Third, HLSA educates the law school and local community about issues affecting the Hispanic population. HLSA accomplishes this goal by sponsoring discussions with local and nationally recognized attorneys, judges, politicians, and professors.
