Plant a Tree – Plant a Whole Lot of Trees
Tree Streets is organized exclusively for a charitable purpose to benefit the public by planting trees along streets within the urban neighborhoods of the City of Little Rock, Arkansas generally bounded by I-630 on the north, Roosevelt Road on the south, McAlmont Street on the east, and Woodrow Street on the west. Additionally, the corporation is committed to educating the public of the benefits of the trees within urban neighborhoods. For more information contact Courtney Little at cl@ndcc.net.

Environmental law: an overview
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was passed in 1970 along with the Environmental Quality Improvement Act, the Environmental Education Act, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The main objective of these federal enactments was to assure that the environment be protected against both public and private actions that failed to take account of costs or harms inflicted on the eco-system.

The EPA was supposed to monitor and analyze the environment, conduct research, and work closely with state and local governments to devise pollution control policies. NEPA (really enacted in 1969) has been described as one of Congress's most far-reaching environmental legislation ever passed. The basic purpose of NEPA is to force governmental agencies to consider the effects on the environment of their decisions.

State laws also reflect the same concerns and common law actions in nuisance allow adversely affected property owners to seek a judicial remedy for environmental harms.

Electoral Battleground: The Environment
The presidential election will be held this year and the two primary presidential candidates, President George Bush and Senator John Kerry, are very far apart on many key environmental, energy, and resources issues. Let’s put together an environmental research team and evaluate the Bush record and Kerry plan.

Real Fans Recycle
An effort is under way to offer recycling at Little Rock Razorback Football games this year on September 18 and November 27. The "Real Fans Recycle" campaign needs volunteers. We are doing
this because it costs the City of Little Rock Parks Department $6000 in labor to clean up the War Memorial Golf Course after each Little Rock Razorback game.

Real Fans Recycle - will encourage fans, particularly tailgaters, to place their recyclables (cans & bottles) in a white/clear bag and their waste (garbage) in a black bag & then to deposit black bags in garbage dumpsters and clear bags in recycling containers. The card with instructions can be filled out & turned in at the recycling sites for a prize drawing.

Volunteer opportunity Number #1
Volunteers are needed to put together packets of 2 plastic bags & a card. It is estimated that 6000 packets will be needed per game. Since the bags & cards will have to be transported to & from Little Rock, only groups in the Little Rock or central Arkansas area that can easily get the supplies (bags & cards) & return the packets should volunteer. Since the first game is just 4 weeks away, 6000 packets need to be assembled in the next 2 weeks. The second group of 6000 will need to be assembled after September 18 and before early November. If you know of volunteer groups that are interested in assembling packets please contact: Carol Bevis at the Pulaski Co. Regional Solid Waste Management District at 501-340-8787 or carol.bevis@pulaskiswdistrict.org

Volunteer opportunity Number #2
Volunteers will be needed to distribute packets (bags & cards) at the Little Rock Razorback Games. Bags will be distributed as vehicles enter the parking areas (War Memorial Golf Course & public parking areas) prior to the games. Work shifts will be 4 hours. If you know if interested volunteers, contact: Suzanne Hirrel at LRSO 501-671-2288 or shirrel@uaex.edu
